Stay Safe in the Heat: Essential Tips for Hot Weather

Hot weather can affect anyone, especially during periods of extreme heat. Spending too much time in high temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, or even heatstroke.
A few simple precautions can help you and those around you stay safe.
Protect Yourself from the Heat

  • Drink water regularly throughout the day—don’t wait until you feel thirsty.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
  • Choose cooler places and stay in the shade or air conditioning whenever possible.
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and protect yourself from direct sunlight.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activities during extreme heat.
  • Check on children, older adults, and vulnerable people, as they may be more affected by high temperatures.
  • Never leave a child or anyone vulnerable inside a parked car, even for a short time.

Know the Warning Signs
Heat exhaustion may cause:
Dizziness • Headache • Heavy sweating • Weakness • Nausea • Muscle cramps
If this happens, move to a cooler place, rest, cool the body, and drink water if able.
Heatstroke Is an Emergency
Confusion, loss of consciousness, or a very high body temperature can indicate heatstroke.
Call emergency medical services immediately and begin cooling the person while waiting for help.

Remember
Most heat-related illnesses are preventable.
Stay hydrated. Stay cool. Know the warning signs. Look after those around you.

Stay informed. Stay prepared. Stay safe.
